What is the IEC 61000-4-2 mentioned in ESS series brochure and other sales materials?

 

   

The IEC 61000-4-2 is a test standard for electronic equipment for immunity to electrostatic discharge.  Test generator specifications, its verification, test method and other details are described.  It is the most commonly used ESD testing standard for almost all electronic product categories.

 

Automotive electronic products category is an exception, to which a different standard ISO 10605 is applied.  The IEC 61000-4-2 is the ESD part of the IEC 61000-4 series basic standards widely referenced in many product families (categories) and product standards.

The constants of 150pF/330 ohm is used to simulate the typical human discharge event.  The standard specifies 150pF as the typical human body capacitance and 330 ohm also as the typical human discharge resistance. 

 

Note that this value resembles to the value of a human body holding a metal object in hand.

The IEC-61000-4-2 adopts the value of 150pF/330 ohm at the typical or standardized one for the purpose of establishing a common basis for many users.  But, in reality, there are wide range of variations for human capacitances and discharge resistances.  ESD problems are not new. 

 

Some companies started ESD testing prior to the issue of the IEC standard and still use their own capacitance and resistance based on their experience.   The NoiseKen approach fulfills these non-IEC users, too.
