We are experiencing component failures due to ESD in our assembly lines. Which capacitor-resistor network should I use for the NoiseKen ESS-2000/2002/2000AX/2002EX ESD simulator to simulate the following events?

I am a user of the NoiseKen Discharge Gun TC-815R (and either of ESS-2000/2002/2000AX/2002EX ESD simulator main unit). Does the use of capacitor-resistor unit of 100pF/1.5K ohm and 200pF/0 ohm make my ESD system compliant to component level ESD test standards for human body model and machine model, respectively, such as

 

1) AEC-Q100-002, ESDA ANSI/EOS/ESD-STM5.1, IEC 61340-3-1, IEC 60749-26, JEDEC JESD22-A114, JEITA EIAJ ED-4701/300 Test method 304 or MIL-STD-883 Method 3015.7 and

2) AEC-Q100-003, ESDA ANSI/ESD STM5.2, IEC 61340-3-2, IEC 60749-27, JEDEC JESD22-A115 or JEITA EIAJ ED-4701/300?

  • Discharge from human body
  • Discharge from other objects than human body such as production and test equipment or packing materials

 

 

The types of events you mentioned are the most common discharge models for component level ESD testing: Human Body Model (HBM) and Machine Model (MM) defining waveforms based on 100pF/1.5k Ohm and 200pF/0 ohm, respectively.

 

Either of ESS-2000/ESS-2002/ESS-2000AX/ESS-2002EX ESD simulator cannot produce the exact waveforms to component level ESD test standards.  For fully compliant component level ESD testing, two products ESS-6002 (2kV) and ESS-6008 (8kV) are available.  Also refer to Q&A 2.

No. The test waveform specifications for component level ESD test standards are very different from the one specified in the IEC 61000-4-2 standard.  For component level ESD testing, two products ESS-6002 (2kV) and ESS-6008 (8kV) are available.

What is the waveform adjustment card Model 06-00064A?    

 

 

It is an optional item for ESS-6000 series simulators.  It consists of the following four pieces of small printed circuit boards enabling to adjust the following parameters: fast rise time for HBM, slow rise time for HBM, fast major pulse period for MM and slow major pulse period for MM.  In place of the standard boards, each card offers the said deviations from the standard value.

What function does the MEASURE port on ESS-6002/6008 perform? 

 

 

A measuring instrument can be connected to this port through which the pin under test is connected to the instrument.  One example is a digital multi-meter to measure resistance between the relevant pins after application of the ESD test pulse.
