The IEC 61000-4-5 is a standard for electronic equipment for immunity to surges.  Test generator specifications, its verifications, test method and other details are described.  It is the most commonly used surge testing standard for almost all electronic product categories.  

An exception is the automotive electronic product category, to which different standards ISO 7637 written reflecting power and other bus specific to vehicle environment, are applied.  The IEC 61000-4-5 is the surge part of the IEC 61000-4 series basic standards widely referenced in many product families (categories) and product standards.
