Now, in the global market, EMC compliance is a must for almost all electronic products.  In European Union, EMC directive sets the essential protection requirements, which have both of emission and immunity aspects. Products, which passed the relevant standards, are deemed to meet these requirements.

In the standard hierarchy, product, product family and generic standards have priority in this order. For a immunity test, however, the most basic type of standard is literally Basic EMC Publications IEC 61000-4 series.  IEC 61000-4 series immunity standards, originally issued as IEC 801 standard with a limited scope to Industrial Process Measurement and Control equipment, have now been referenced in generic and many product (family) immunity standards, being a great significance to most manufacturers.
